The cottage at Dromore West, resting at the foot of
the splendid Ox Mountains, looks across a few meadows
to the blue waters of the western ocean. Here is peace
: sheep graze contentedly; light falls softly on green
undulating countryside; and the air, sweet and wholesome,
can be evocatively scented with thin smoke from slumbering
turf- fires.
Sligo, of course, is Yeats country : and still in this
rural idyll, the lake- waters ‘lap with low sounds by
the shore’. Lisadell , is just across the bay, while
Ben Bulben’s lofty profile, clearly visible from the
cottage, keeps eternal vigil on Drumcliff churchyard,
Yeats’s final resting place.
For the energetic, there’s sailing on Sligo Bay, golf
at Rosses Point, world-class surfing at nearby Easkey,
pony- trekking in the hills, and endless possibilities
for the hiker and climber - all within very easy reach.
The sea is never far away. Not to be missed, for bracing
walks, is the long stretch of sandy beach at Enniscrone.
A mile or two east of the cottage is the justly- acclaimed
spirituality centre of Skreen – a foundation from the
mystic fastnesses of New Mexico’s deserts. While to
the west, a short stroll and you’re at "The Flying Horse"
– a traditional tavern, where the ghost of Queen Maeve,
the genius loci, has been said to epiphanise to late-night
philosophers and poets.
The village of Dromore West is just a few minutes drive
away – Sligo town about twenty. From there, Donegal
and the North-west are comfortably accessible.
